Among the famed surfing areas is the unique Windansea, with its sloping beach of coarse crystal sand, interrupted by rusty-brown cliffs which add a bit of contrast and beauty to this popular surfing spot, near La Jolla.
When a strong south swell rolls across the reef at Windansea, the deceptively calm swell changes into an eruption similar to an exploding volcano, beginning slowly with a peak, which warns the surfer of the approaching waves. As the sea gathers her powers, she will raise the height of the oncoming swell into a towering watery mountain, with its face as steep as a vertical wall. When a surfer begins his takeoff, he will experience an elevator drop that he will remember for the rest of his life.
Windansea is not only a fast takeoff, but has a south swell which the reef adapts to so perfectly, the wave creates an ever-building left shoulder which provides the best ride, the right closing out completely.
As the wave moves onward, tumbling and churning across the reef, it approaches the beach, adding a spectacular end by doubling up, reaching outward and engulfing the shore line with its last remaining drain of power.
Here at Windansea, a surfer is able to adapt his capabilities in creating a good example of the interplay of forces by using the energies of the sea for his motivation.
